6/11/2023 0 Comments Fieldrunners unblocked![]() Aside from their intensity, the best thing about these matches is that they're surprisingly short, and thus better suited to bouts of casual play than the 50 and 60 stage rounds of the default mode. I particularly enjoyed the Sudden Death maps, which swamped my screen with runners, planes and motorcyclists and demanded lightning-fast tower placement to kill a set number of runners before they inevitably overrun the screen. But if you prefer more structured lanes with preset paths, you'll also find those here as well, along with a couple of extra modes that break the inevitable monotony of the core strategy. Some of Fieldrunners 2's roughly two dozen maps feature the daunting but iconic open fields of the original, encouraging the creation of free-form mazes that prolong the runners' eastward march for as long as you have the cash to build towers. Of course, the sheer variety helps as well. It's this dose of unpredictability that manages to make Fieldrunners 2 more enjoyable than the first, and the strategy involved requires heavier thinking that you'll find in a rote tower defense game. If you don't have all the exits blocked off and backup towers built to account for such contingencies, it's possible these adventurous little guys could make it all the way to the other side. A trajectory line suggests the direction in which most of the runners will go, but (and this is the best surprise of all) it's not uncommon to see a few brave redcoats attempt to run around your maze of glue machines and turrets while the towers focus on the main path. ![]() For one, the runners no longer cling to inalterable paths. That's not to say that nothing's changed quite the contrary. The overarching message that Fieldrunners 2 relates is that a good tower defense game doesn't need all the doodads that developers and modders have been tacking on ever since the first Warcraft III tower defense mods, and the finesse demanded by its gameplay goes a long way toward proving that point. Subatomic's philosophy here is thus one of refinement over reinvention. The titular fieldrunners still cavort about in their crimson jackets, and you still drag towers into the field from the bottom of the screen. The playful art style still delivers a welcome counterbalance to an often punishing difficulty level, and the spherical turrets and Tesla coils might as well have been copied and pasted from the original. Indeed, apart from a lush world map and smirk-worthy loading screens, it's hard to tell what's changed after booting it up.
